Celebrities and regular people around the world are experiencing revolutionary fat loss with the help of GLP-1s. However, many GLP-1 users lose a good bit of muscle, too. This fat and muscle loss can sometimes lead to a hollower appearance. Dr. Daniel Smith of Skin and Body Refinery MedSpa has a solution.
“GLP-1s ideally should be taken with a high-fat, high-protein diet to prevent emaciation, but many people skip that,” he says. “So we do a lot of techniques to counteract the side effects of those medications, such as volumizing the face, re-volumizing the breasts, or volumizing the butt.”
Through Skin and Body Refinery MedSpa, Dr. Smith now offers Cellenis Derma PRP gel fillers. The main component of these non-surgical fillers is platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
The therapeutic benefits of PRP are well-established. Platelets, a component of blood, are rich in growth factors. During PRP therapy, providers use a centrifuge to separate platelets from a sample of the patient’s own blood and concentrate the platelets within the plasma.
Providers can then inject this solution directly into injured muscles, ligaments, tendons, or other tissues. Because PRP has such a high concentration of growth factors, it stimulates tissue healing and regeneration.
Therapeutic injections of platelet-rich plasma can support healing and help rejuvenate tissue, but they don’t act as fillers. With PRP gel fillers, Dr. Smith combines the benefits of PRP injections and dermal fillers into a single treatment. And just like with PRP injections, the material used in PRP gel fillers comes from the patient’s own body.
“They're actually done with your own blood and spun down to make it into a gel,” Dr. Smith explains. “You're filled with your own filler, if that makes sense.”
After drawing the patient’s blood, Dr. Smith prepares the filler. “We separate out the plasma, which is the yellow part of the blood. We take off the top part. It's albumin, like an egg white, and it heats up into a gel,” he says. “The bottom part is the PRP, which we want to keep alive. When the gel cools off, we mix them together, and now you have a PRP gel filler.”
Dr. Smith has witnessed the transformative effects these fillers have had on many of his patients. “This PRP gel filler is able to go in and biostimulate, regenerate, and regrow in those areas, which includes vascularization and nerves,” he says.
“The breasts are a great example. They might be flat after GLP-1 treatment. But they’re almost like sponges: When you put the vessels back, they start to reinflate,” he continues. “And the volume we put in there with the gel inflates the area as well.”
PRP gel fillers can help GLP-1 users achieve their ideal physiques, but they’re about more than just aesthetics. When vascularization increases, so does circulation and nerve activity.
For many of Dr. Smith’s patients, weight-loss treatment with GLP-1s is just part of the journey. GLP-1 treatment can help them shed extra weight, but with the help of PRP gel fillers, they can attain the look they desire.
