Sabrina Carpenter delivered more than just a pop performance at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards — she made a bold statement. On Sunday night, the singer performed her latest single Tears with a mix of high-energy choreography, theatrical flair, and a powerful message of solidarity for the LGBTQIA+ community.

A Performance with a Message

Carpenter took the stage in a silver, sparkly fringe dress before a quick costume change, surrounded by dancers dressed as police officers and a lineup of drag artists — including several from RuPaul’s Drag Race. Among them was Honey Balenciaga, who recently toured with Beyoncé on Cowboy Carter. Together, they amplified the performance with unapologetic queer representation. Some performers also held signs that read “In Trans We Trust” and “Protect Trans Rights”, turning the stage into both a concert and a protest.

Art as Resistance

The performance comes amid growing concerns over legislative efforts in the U.S. aimed at restricting gender identity care. For many fans, Carpenter’s staging felt like both an act of resistance and a celebration of inclusivity. Carpenter, already known as a vocal ally of the LGBTQIA+ community, mirrored themes from her Tears music video. That visual features Emmy-winning actor Colman Domingo in drag and pays homage to cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Impact Beyond the Stage

With her VMA performance, Carpenter joined a growing number of artists using their platform to spark conversation about equality and representation. The result was an electrifying display that reminded audiences that music can both entertain and empower.
