To many people, the term “breast augmentation” conjures images of women undergoing invasive procedures to dramatically increase their breast size. But as California plastic surgeon Dr. Rachel Ford can tell you, women are increasingly requesting a more conservative look called “ballerina boobs.”

“The ‘ballerina boobs’ look is all about subtle breast enhancement,” Dr. Ford says. “Ballerinas tend to have smaller breasts that complement their thin frames. Their breasts add just enough curve without distracting from their overall physique.”

For some women, this look is achieved through reducing the size of existing breast implants. For those with naturally smaller breasts, Dr. Ford subtly increases total breast volume.

The renewed interest in this more proportional look is in line with changing plastic surgery trends as a whole. Dr. Ford says that in recent years, patients seeking facelifts, body contouring, and other procedures have started going for more of a natural look. But the shift isn’t just about aesthetics, at least when it comes to breast size.

“I think many women are tired of carrying heavy, large implants,” says Dr. Ford. “They want something smaller and lighter that doesn’t hinder daily activities or exercise.” She notes that recipients of larger breast implants sometimes experience neck and upper back pain, much like women whose breasts are naturally very large.

“Ballerina boobs” can create or accentuate beautiful, natural curves while sidestepping the challenges that often come with larger implants. Smaller implants also tend to be a better choice for patients who want to preserve their new physiques for as long as possible.

Like most plastic surgeons, Dr. Ford hopes that her work will continue to look great for decades after the surgery. In her experience, doing breast augmentations with smaller implants makes that easier.

A lot of it has to do with gravity. Larger implants naturally weigh more, which makes it harder for surrounding tissues to support them. With time and age, the implants can start to hang lower. Eventually, they may develop a noticeable sag, and the patient may come in for an adjustment.

“Ballerina boobs” may offer advantages over larger implants, but every cosmetic procedure comes with potential downsides. Before planning a procedure, Dr. Ford helps each patient understand the possible negatives.

“The trade-off when discussing the ‘ballerina boobs’ aesthetic is determining whether a conservative implant will provide the overall volume a patient is hoping to achieve with surgery,” she explains. “This requires a lengthy discussion during the consultation about the patient’s goals for the operation, along with an examination and measurements.”

You might wonder why there’s been such a shift in patients’ preferences. Dr. Ford credits celebrities, at least in part, for inspiring interest in the natural look.

“I think many celebrities are getting tired of overly large implants from both an aesthetic and functional standpoint,” she theorizes. “Several of them have been very open about discussing this issue, which helps de-stigmatize the topic for the general public.”

Does celebrity dialogue push ordinary people to mindlessly follow the crowd? Dr. Ford doesn’t think so. If anything, it does the opposite, and that’s a good thing.

“I think it encourages people to question what the right look is for them and what makes them feel best in their own bodies,” she says. “Gone are the days of cookie-cutter breast implants!”
