Women have traditionally made up the majority of patients at just about any plastic surgeon’s office. But as aesthetic medicine has gained mainstream acceptance, men have started to close the gap. Dr. Hani Sinno, a board-certified plastic surgeon based in Montreal, has seen a steady increase in men seeking cosmetic procedures.

The trend isn’t unique to Dr. Sinno’s practice. Within the past few years, the demand for male plastic surgery has grown significantly. From 2018 to 2022, men accounted for 13.5%–13.9% of cosmetic surgery procedures worldwide. In 2023, they accounted for 14.3%, and in 2024, that number jumped to 16.1%.

So what kinds of cosmetic procedures do men seek? The men who come to Dr. Sinno’s practice are looking for a variety of results, but a few types of procedures stand out.

“The most requested procedures I see among men are blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty, and gynecomastia surgery,” he says. “Blepharoplasty is a surgery on the eyelids that can fix sagging upper eyelids and puffy under-eye bags. It creates a refreshed, youthful look without altering other facial features.”

Dr. Sinno explains that men seeking rhinoplasty are often looking for something slightly different than women. “Usually, women want a smaller, more delicate nose,” he says. “Men are typically hoping to correct a specific imperfection, like smoothing out a bump on the bridge or narrowing a bulbous tip, while still maintaining a strong, masculine profile. Most of the time, it’s more about the shape of the nose than the size.”

Gynecomastia surgery removes excess breast tissue in men. Whether due to genetics, certain medications, or other factors, some men grow too much breast gland tissue. Gynecomastia surgery removes that tissue and helps restore the natural chest contour.

Most of Dr. Sinno’s patients are more focused on attaining a subtle, natural look than chasing a dramatic transformation. “We’re in a wellness era,” he says. “People are taking better care of themselves as a whole, and with that comes wanting to match your outside with how you feel on the inside.”

That means a young entrepreneur might undergo a blepharoplasty in hopes of appearing as energetic, engaged, and driven as he feels. Or a bodybuilder might seek gynecomastia surgery to show off the pectoral muscles he’s been building for years.

One might think that Dr. Sinno would take a different approach when performing a cosmetic procedure on a man versus on a woman. However, he says that the differences have more to do with a patient’s individual goals than with their sex.

“I think it’s important to take an individualistic approach with all patients to reach their natural-looking results,” he says.

Critics often claim that cosmetic procedures are about vanity, but Dr. Sinno has observed otherwise. Many of his patients are focused on improving themselves inside and out, and aesthetics is just a part of the journey.

“I’m helping people look and feel like themselves again, and sometimes, it’s for the first time in their lives,” he says.
