YouTuber Kira Shannon opened up in a new interview with Ruthless Media about how she leveraged her social media career by using her degree in Fine Arts.

Kira started her college career at the University of Miami, where she studied until the end of her sophomore year. She then enrolled at the University of Memphis, where she graduated with her BFA and Summa Cum Laude honors in 2018.

Although she applied to college without the intent of becoming an influencer, the YouTuber, who boasts over 1 million online followers, realized after her sophomore year that the digital space was perfect for her.

“When I was in college, I was using social media as a creative outlet — I had no intention of making money from it, let alone have it be my entire career. Ultimately, my degree ended up contributing immensely to my online and personal success, but not in the way I had expected” Kira revealed.

Once Kira transferred to the University of Memphis halfway through her college career, she started to see money come in from her social media presence. It wouldn’t be until her senior year that she was fully living off of her influencer income.

“The turning point for me was when I was a senior in college, living on my own, and simultaneously attending classes while making all of my income from social media,” she elaborated.“With the revenue I was generating online, it seemed inefficient to pursue anything else.”

Kira noted that by attending her classes on a daily basis and graduating with her degree, she “learned the importance of punctuality, integrity, kindness and honesty” — all of which she’s carried into her progression online.

“Those qualities shape every single thing I do — every decision that I make — and the way that I approach every day, ” the YouTuber added. “Whether I’m tackling something work-related or not. All areas of my life are better because of the intention I bring to them.”

The YouTuber went on to explain how her high school and college programs “conditioned” students with the idea that “no matter your talent, you will not secure a job if you aren’t punctual, organized and kind.

“Higher education initially helped me generate those skills because I genuinely wanted to succeed,” Kira stated. “Once I began to naturally develop them, I realized how much happier I was giving that approach to everything I do.”

After graduating, Kira said she felt satisfaction in following her intuition to stick to social media despite having her BFA. Although she’s well on her way to becoming a prominent online influencer, the YouTuber noted that she’s elated her studies helped her achieve even more than she imagined.
