A Modern Revival of Louis Vuitton’s First Wristwatch

Louis Vuitton has introduced the Monterey, a refined and limited-edition timepiece that pays homage to the Maison’s first-ever wristwatch, originally launched in the late 1980s. With only 188 pieces produced, the Monterey represents a seamless blend of vintage heritage and contemporary sophistication.

Design That Honors the Original

The Louis Vuitton Monterey features a 39mm yellow gold case that mirrors the iconic silhouette of its predecessor. Its pocket-watch-inspired crown positioned at 12 o’clock gives the timepiece an elegant architectural balance, while the white Grand Feu enamel dial recalls the clean graphic aesthetic of the 1980s model. Red and blue accents highlight the twin hour and minute scales, maintaining the heritage color codes of the original design.

The back of the watch proudly bears an engraving reading “1 of 188”, a reminder of its exclusivity. The quick-release strap system echoes the convenience of the earlier version, combining function with timeless style.

Precision and Innovation Inside

Replacing the quartz movement of the original, the new Monterey houses an in-house automatic caliber — the LFTMA01.02. This movement, developed by La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, provides a 45-hour power reserve and exemplifies the Maison’s dedication to technical craftsmanship. Its minimalist, time-only display enhances the understated sophistication of the piece.

Respecting Tradition Through Modern Craftsmanship

Reinterpreting a creation means respecting its design and spirit. We maintain the same graphic codes, but strive for a more modern and elevated feel,” said Matthieu Hegi, Artistic Director at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton. This philosophy underscores the Monterey’s essence — a faithful reimagining that captures both the past and the present of Louis Vuitton’s watchmaking artistry.

From the LV I and LV II to the Monterey

The original LV I and LV II watches, designed by the renowned architect Gae Aulenti, were celebrated for their unique lug-free “pebble shape”. These vintage models have since become highly sought-after collector’s pieces. The new Monterey revives that legacy, embodying a dialogue between heritage and innovation, and reaffirming Louis Vuitton’s position in the realm of fine horology.

The Louis Vuitton Monterey stands as a collector’s statement — a masterpiece that bridges eras, celebrating design, precision, and enduring luxury.
