Iris van Herpen Just Created the World's First Plasma Dress, and It's as Wild as It Sounds



In Paris, Iris van Herpen once again proved that nature remains fashion's most luxurious muse, debuting her "plasma" dresses in Sonic Starquakes, a collection built around the architecture of starquakes, the violent vibrations that ripple through exploding supernovas light-years away.

Fractal Universe: A Dress That Actually Sparks



The collection's centerpiece, Fractal Universe, evokes both a New Year's Eve countdown and a quietly ominous apocalypse. Real lightning bolts travel across the garment, achieved by charging the dress with electricity and then cryogenically preserving it to trap the energy of billions of electrons inside.

When the Dress Started Sparking on Its Own



In the nights before the show, that stored tension began discharging on its own, branching flashes racing through the dress's three-dimensional structure, originally planned to happen live on the runway. The released energy is technically plasma, the same substance that makes up stars, solar wind, and nebulae, and it left Paris speechless, including muses and clients Princess Maria Chiara of Bourbon-Two Sicilies and actress Daphne Guinness.

An Unlikely Muse: A Welsh Scientist's Singing Machine



Part of the collection's inspiration traces back to Welsh researcher Margaret Watts Hughes (1842-1907), who invented the eidophone, a megaphone-like device with a membrane covered in colored powder that shifted into visual patterns as she sang into it, essentially materializing her voice as art.

Helix Nebula: Glass, Light, and a Reactive Glow



Van Herpen also unveiled Helix Nebula, a top built from two sculptural, hand-blown glass moon shapes filled with plasma that reacts to touch. Under the runway's dim lighting, the piece glowed with a deep red, almost mystical light, using the same hand-blown glass technique behind the 15,000-bubble gown that stunned at this year's Met Gala, worn by elite athlete Eileen Gu and activated by ultraviolet light.

Science, Wonder, and a Refusal to Explain



Within a day of the show, the collection had already gone viral across TikTok and Instagram, further cementing Van Herpen's role as fashion's resident philosopher-scientist. But she's careful to clarify that she isn't trying to explain the universe. As the show notes put it: "I do not seek to explain these forces; instead, they sharpen our awareness of the unknown, reminding us of the mysteries that lie within this multiverse."
