Plastic surgery is a continuously evolving industry, and certain procedures tend to be more popular at particular times than others. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the top cosmetic surgical procedures in 2023 included liposuction, breast augmentation, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), breast lifts, and eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).
Liposuction was the most popular procedure, with over 2.2 million surgeries performed worldwide in 2023. Breast augmentation remained a leading choice among patients, with 304,181 procedures performed in 2023, a four percent increase from the previous year. There has been a trend towards smaller implant sizes, and people seek more natural results.
Minimally invasive procedures have experienced significant growth as well. According to the ASPS, Botox injections topped the list, with 4.4 million procedures in 2023, a seven percent increase from the previous year. Dermal fillers followed, with 1.8 million procedures, reflecting a five percent rise. These treatments are preferred because they can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and restore facial volume with less downtime than other procedures.
Dr. Sean McNally, a board-certified plastic surgeon based in Portland, Oregon, has noticed the changing trends within his own office. Mommy makeovers—a combination of procedures aimed at restoring a woman’s pre-pregnancy body—are particularly popular in his practice. He notes an increase in older women seeking these procedures, a demographic shift from the traditional, younger age group.
“As far as most popular procedures, if we’re talking about cosmetic procedures, I still feel like mommy makeovers are the big thing nowadays,”explains Dr. McNally.
“I think that there’s been a huge increase in women who are older than typically mommy makeovers would be done in the past. I’m seeing people in their 50s and 60s wanting these types of procedures, which is new.”
When discussing his favorite surgeries, Dr. McNally says that both the smaller, interactive in-office procedures and more extensive surgeries like mommy makeovers have big rewards for the patients. He finds in-office procedures, such as skin cancer excisions, fulfilling due to the opportunity for patient interaction during the surgery. He also says that extended body contouring cases can be incredibly rewarding, despite being more physically demanding.
Dr. McNally’s approach to patient care is centered on understanding the goals of each patient. He stresses the importance of listening to patients, noting that their desired outcomes may not always align with conventional beauty standards.
“In my practice, my goal in our consultation is to ensure that I’m getting the idea of what you want for yourself and then trying to use the surgical techniques we have to achieve that goal because the whole point of this is not for me to tell somebody what they need to get them to look the way that I want them to look,”he says. By tailoring procedures to each patient’s unique aspirations, he ensures long-term satisfaction and results that resonate with their personal definitions of beauty.
In terms of emerging trends, Dr. McNally observes a shift towards more natural results in plastic surgery.
“I think that people are moving towards this more natural result, but I don’t think that’s necessarily going to stay that way forever,” says Dr. McNally. “That trend will probably reverse again in the future. Everybody is always aiming toward a different goal that changes with time.”As the plastic surgery industry and overall trends evolve, Dr. Sean McNally and his team will remain dynamic in addressing each patient’s desires and goals.
